Often the best way to find cheap hotel accommodation in a major city is to be prepared to stay a little way out from the city centre. In this Dublin is no different. Providing you are close to the main arterial bus routes or, in Dublin's case, the DART train line or the LUAS tram service, the disadvantage of a short journey into town can be offset by the relative peace of the suburbs, sea air and access to suburban centres and shopping alternatives. For those driving to Dublin it is often far easier to get parking in a suburban hotel and better to use public transport for excursions into the city.
The south side of the city is generally perceived to be the more affluent side (particularly by southsiders!). Here you will find the Mount Herbert Hotel, a family run hotel in leafy Ballsbridge affordable to most. There's a full list of hotels in this area on our Ballsbridge Hotels page.
A little further out, the Stillorgan Park Hotel is set in a well-to-do residential area on the main Stillorgan/Donnybrook road into the city, well served by buses outside and by the Aircoach direct from the airport, it's equally convenient for the ferry at Dun Laoghaire, Blackrock and the campus of University College Dublin.
The Edwardian suburb of Rathmines is these days subsumed into the city proper, being just a twenty-minute walk across the canal to Temple Bar and less to Stephens Green and Grafton Street, though it's well served by buses too. It's home to the Days Inn Rathmines and the Travelodge Dublin City, two budget hotels across the road from each other and both run by chains of worldwide reputation.
On the north side of the city, Travelodge have another hotel close to Dublin Airport. Two other cheap options that serve the airport are the Clarion Dublin Airport in the airport itself and the Skylon Hotel on the Swords Road into the city.
Much of the recent development in Dublin has been to the west, centred around industrial and business centres such as Park West and the Citywest campus. Although a little way out, hotels such as the Maldron Citywest, Bewleys Hotel Newlands Cross and the Clarion Liffey Valley are all ideal locations for business people travelling to or from the rest of the country. They're also convenient for those driving from the airport via the M50.
