Aside from the city centre, Ballsbridge and Dublin 4 & 6 are the most popular areas for visitors to Dublin. These suburbs are home to the prime real estate in Dublin, offering visitors the best of both worlds: being within walking distance of Dublin centre, while at the same time offering a haven from the buzz of this vibrant city. Much of these districts are tree-lined streets surrounded by parks and Georgian townhouses, ideal for the wandering visitor.

One of the principal reasons for the area's popularity is ease of access to the city. There is a regular Dart service to the City, a journey which takes about 5 minutes. In addition, there are about 10 bus routes that visitors can use to get into the centre. Should you choose to walk, it takes about 20 minutes to walk up to St Stephens Green, Grafton Street and the main shopping areas of Dublin.

Provided that it is not raining, it is a pleasant walk through some of the nicest parts of Georgian Dublin. Ireland's new national rugby and soccer stadium - the Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road - is due to open in 2010, when it will once more become a popular destination for visiting fans and those attending concerts there. When a major event is on, Lansdowne Road is transformed from a quiet picturesque tree lined avenue to a mass of heaving bodies.

A main attraction in the Ballsbridge area is the Royal Dublin Society (RDS). The RDS is the top venue in Dublin for major exhibitions. It's pavilion at Simonscourt is also one of Dublin's top venues for concerts. The centre of this area is the American Embassy, surrounded by many more prime locations and venues for entertainment and fine dining. From here you are within walking distance of the main business districts in Dublin and as always are on all the main bus-routes to wherever else you may need to visit during the course of your stay.

Head a little further west and you will find Ranelagh and Rathmines, a hub for students and tourists alike. These area host some of the finest and most inexpensive restaurants in Dublin, covering a range of cuisines, as well as popular clubs, pubs and shops.

In Ballsbridge, the three former Jurys hotels are now under new ownership and management, offering a the full range of hotel types and standards at very competitive prices. These are the Ballsbridge Court (formerly the 5 star Berkeley Court), The Ballsbridge Inn and the Ballsbridge Towers.

Another hotel offering five star luxury is the Four Seasons Hotel right beside the RDS, a modern purpose-built hotel with an extensive selection of rooms and facilities. Across the road, Bewleys Ballsbridge is very reasonably priced and set in the unique ambience of a beautifully restored 19th century Masonic School.

The Mount Herbert Hotel is set in over 2 acres and has beautiful gardens, children's playground and security controlled parking for up to 100 cars. The Loughran family have been welcoming guests for over 40 years, and the hotel is known as a "Home from Home" for its many customers.

For something different, The Dylan a wonderful small boutique hotel in a splendid red brick Victorian building, the beauty of which is reflected throughout the interior. This property is a previous winner of the a yearly world-wide award 'Small Luxury Hotels of the World'.

Close by, the Pembroke Townhouse merges three Georgian townhouses with contemporary style to create a special ambience of timeless luxury, just five minutes' walk from the canal and fifteen from the city centre.

The Dublin 4 and 6 areas start at the canal and there are a number of good hotels to be found there, offering proximity to the city at a slight remove. The Burlington has one of the largest function rooms in Dublin and has hosted some major events in the city's history over the last thirty years. Business and leisure travellers alike are catered for also in the newer Grand Canal Hotel and in the Mespil Hotel, both nearby. Those seeking something smaller and more intimate should check out The Schoolhouse, another conversion of a former school building.

In Rathmines, The Hilton overlooks the canal and is right beside the LUAS line, while just a few doors away The Portobello - opened in 1793 as the Grand Canal Tavern - has been providing for travellers since before the canal itself was there. In the village itself both the Days Hotel Rathmines and the Travelodge Dublin City provide comfortable and affordable accommodation.

If you wish to get away from Dublin City yet still remain within close proximity, The Tara hotel has the perfect location. The hotel is very personal, friendly and full of local charm, well suited for the corporate guest or the tourist, with some rooms overlooking beautiful Dublin Bay. The hotel is close to fashionable Blackrock and Dun Laoire and offers a unique setting for business or pleasure.

Likewise, the Stillorgan Park Hotel is located minutes from Dublin city on the main N11 road heading south. Full parking available and the Aircoach direct from Dublin Airport stops literally outside, making it the ideal location from which to explore the city and its suburbs. It is also just a mile away from the campus of University College Dublin at Belfield.
