If you are travelling to Dublin on a budget, looking for a value for money hotel at an affordable price, there are a few different approaches you can take.

First, consider staying out of town a bit. Dublin is small enough that all the suburbs are no more than a 30-40 minute journey from the city centre and you may gain from a quieter location away from the hustle and bustle. Also, the suburbs have much of interest in themselves with local shopping and sights. For example, the harbour town of Dun Laoghaire, where the Royal Marine Hotel is located, has plenty to entertain you for a weekend while still being a forty minute DART ride from the city.

If you like the idea of waking up to sea air, both the Clontarf Castle on the north side and the Tara Hotel on the south are close to the coast, bus routes and DART stations.

Ballsbridge is a popular destination for its proximity to the embassy belt and events in the RDS. It will become even more so with the opening of the new Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road and the return of rugby and soccer internationals there. It is the home of a number of hotels including the Ballsbridge Inn, Ballsbridge Towers, Bewleys and the Mount Herbert Hotel. Many of these adjust there prices according to events in the vicinity but Bewleys have a fixed price throughout the year, as they have also at the Bewleys Hotel in Dublin Airport.

There are several other mid-price hotels close to and within the Airport, including the Carlton Dublin Airport, the Clarion Dublin Airport and the Premier Inn Dublin Airport. What you lose by being a bit out of town you gain with a short journey on arrival and departure.

As we mentioned regarding Ballsbridge, watch the seasons. Jurys Croke Park is an excellent hotel which offers very good value when there's nothing on in the nearby GAA stadium.

Closer to town (Dubliners always call the city "town"), there are a number of hotels geared towards families or the business traveller. The Mespil Hotel and the Schoolhouse overlook the Grand Canal, while The Burlington, The Holiday Inn Dublin City Centre and the Grand Canal Hotel are all nearby.

The Maldron Hotel Cardiff Lane is a new hotel in the new area of Dublin Docklands - an area that hardly existed twenty years ago. The Maldron chain have another hotel at Smithfield, just a short LUAS trip or a 15 minute stroll from the city centre.

If you don't mind the noise and bustle and like to be at the thick of things, there are plenty of options in and around the city itself. In Temple Bar Blooms Hotel is popular with business travellers and groups. You can read a full list of Temple Bar hotels in this class here: Good Value Temple Bar Hotels.

For families, the Camden Court Hotel is just a short walk from St Stephens Green and Grafton Street. Others around the Green include The Grafton Capital Hotel, The Mercer Hotel, The Mont Clare and Stauntons On The Green, while both Longfields and the Pembroke Townhouse offer something a little different as a hotel experience. The Mercer also has a self-catering option at the Mercer Court Apartments, available in summer and at certain other times of year.

The Academy Hotel is just off O'Connell Street and gets very good reviews from visitors. Lynams Hotel and Cassidys Hotel are also right at the city centre, popular and affordable. If you like old world traditional hotels, The Gresham on O'Connell Street and Wynns of Abbey Street are two of the Grand Old Dames of Dublin hotels. Both of these offer great value for money, especially out of season.

Remember that the hotels described here cover a range of facilities, locations and prices, so check the individual hotel pages and our customers reviews for details, or do an availability search to compare prices.
