Grafton Street AreaGenerally considered Dublin's premier shopping area, Grafton Street, running from St Stephens Green to Trinity College, also puts you right at the heart of Southside Dublin, being within easy reach of Dail Eireann, the National Museum, Dublin Castle and Temple Bar. As well as main street designer labels and global brands, there's plenty of bargains to be picked up on Wicklow Street and in the City Arcade off George's Street. It's also a great area for the bibliophile, with several of Dublin's major bookshops nearby. A good mid range option here is the Grafton Capital Hotel (31), which offers quality accommodation in a contemporary modern setting. The Grafton Capital is just off Grafton Street behind the Stephens Green Shopping Centre. Owned by Capital Bars this hotel has the added benefit that your room card gives you free admission to many of Dublin's top bars & nightclubs and breakfast is served to 11am! Two other hotels nearby are Brooks Hotel and the Drury Court Hotel. Brooks (29) is a designer boutique hotel, which pays great attention to detail and personal service. It has a wonderful old world ambiance but with all the creature comforts and hi-tech facilities you’d expect of a modern hotel. Our customers love and give it great reviews with very high satisfaction ratings a favourable comments about the staff. The Drury Court (30) is a smaller boutique hotel with an intimate atmosphere and very competitive rates. Also behind the Stephens Green Shopping Centre lies the Mercer Hotel (32), combining old-world charm with contemporary style. It's the perfect base to explore all the city's restaurants, museums and pubs. The business traveller will enjoy the close proximity to Dublin's main commercial and business centre and can also enjoy the city's nightlife. Across the road the Mercer Group run the Mercer Court (33), a set of modern student apartments which are opened to self-catering tourists in the summer months. There are no hotels (or for that matter, pubs) actually on Grafton Street. The nearest claimant is The Westbury, just metres away on Harry Street. One of the city's most luxurious hotels, it's the ideal location from which to launch your shopping expedition. The Central Hotel (28) on Exchequer Street is also just a few minutes walk away. a classic Victorian Hotel which has been serving tourists for over 120 years, its plush Library Bar is one of the few oases of calm in this busy area. Another old-style hotel in the area is Buswells (41). Situated opposite Leinster House (the building in which the Irish Parliament is located), it's a favourite haunt of politicians and lobbyists, which gives it a unique ambience not found anywhere else. Anywhere else, that is, except in the famous Horseshoe Bar of The Shelbourne, where being known by name is a pre-requisite for entry into Dublin's chattering classes. Long a flagship for Dublin hotels, The Shelbourne reopened recently after being closed for a year for a complete refurbishment. The Shelbourne overlooks Stephens Green. Two other luxury hotels that do so are The Fitzwilliam (34) at the top of Grafton Street and the Stephens Green Hotel (39) just a side of the Green away. Both are superb hotels at the high end of the price scale. At the other end, Kellys Hotel used to be a popular choice, but unfortunately it's now closed. Budget travellers should look to the Kildare Street Hotel, overlooking Trinity College and with a lively bar below. If you can't find availability in the area, two hotels worth considering are The Burlington and the Camden Court Hotel. Both are on the roads out of town just a 15 minute walk or a short bus ride from Grafton Street. The Burlington is one of Dublin's most popular business hotels, with excellent conference facilities, while the Camden Court (36) is ideal for families as well as the business traveller. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
